Strathmore Law Students Win Insurance Debate Tournament

From L-R Greg Otieno, Sharon Ouno, Kimberly Muriithi, Njuguna Macharia

Strathmore Law School Team Ndindi Muigai - comprising 3rd Years’ Greg Otieno and Ndindi Muigai won the 1st prize- while Team Luis Franceschi -comprising Kimberly Muriithi (3rd Year) and Njuguna Macharia (2nd Year) took 2nd prize at the Insurance Debate Tournament hosted at Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA). The best female orator at the debate was student Sharon Ouno (1st year).

The event, which took place on 26th and 27th February with the theme Insurance Penetration, was sponsored by Swiss Re an insurance firm in the UK, and was co-sponsored by AKI Kenya. The companies discussed issues to do with insurance and youth, attracting debaters from several Kenyan universities. Debaters argued for or against the theme on matters of health, life, and medical insurance.

The teams from the Strathmore Debate Club worked hard to achieve this win. They met daily for two hours, at least four weeks prior to the event, to practise for the big day. Their sacrifice and dedication, under their patron John Muriithi, was commendable.

On the final day, the teams’ motion stated that in order to breach the protection gap (the life of an insurer currently vs. the gap of the insurer when the breadwinner dies), insurance companies should get tax relief.

The winning team were awarded Kshs. 20,000 each, while the 1st runners-up won Kshs. 15,000 each. The best orator received Kshs. 5,000. All winners were also awarded trophies.
